Since the code for ADI1_OPEN and ADI2_OPEN must be re-written an opportunity presents itself to make the syntax for accessing HDS and FITS files more flexible and compatible with other software (ie. FTOOLS).
Most, if not all work need to be done with FITS access, and it is proposed the new subroutine ADF2_OPEN be able to cope with all the following forms for opeing the file data.fits,
