This document explains the system architecture of the ASTERIX package and in particular the way in which make files are used. It also highlights some of the reasons why things are done the way they are. Sometimes things me seem more complicated than they need be, but before changing anything fundamental be sure to test that it will work on all the machines supported (be especially wary of vendor specific make file features), and that it will work in both the development and publicly released systems.
