Personal Research Fellowships

We encourage those interested in joining our group as research fellows to seek external funding for personal fellowships. Please contact the Head of group (tjp [at] star.sr.bham.ac.uk) or one of the permanent staff members of the group well ahead of the deadline, and we will be very happy to work on a grant application with you. A list of possible sources is given below (Note that all of these fellowships have various restrictions on them).

1. STFC Fellowships

There are two sorts of fellowships offered by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), which is the principal funding body for research grants in Astronomy in the UK:

i) Postdoctoral Fellowships (up to 3 years).

Those with less than 7 years research experience (counts from the start of your PhD programme) are eligible.

ii) Advanced Fellowships (up to 5 years)

These are for more experienced researchers.

The deadline for applications for both these fellowships is 11 October 2008, and details can be found at the STFC Fellowship Pages. Please note that each University has an upper limit for how many applications it can accept for STFC PDRAs and AFs. Therefore, each prospective applicant is requested to write to the head of group, Prof. Trevor Ponman, (tjp[at]star.sr.bham.ac.uk) at the first instance to seek pre-approval for the application, preferably by 15 September 2008.


2. Royal Society Fellowships

There are three relevant fellowships offered by the Royal Society:.

i) Royal Society University Research Fellowships

These are of 5+3 years duration, and are aimed at more senior researchers who eventually seek a permanent faculty position. Applicants may not have had not more than 3 postdoctoral positions at the time of application. Deadline 15 October 2008.

ii) Newton International Fellowships

These are of 2 years duration, for non-UK citizens, within 5 years of receipt of their PhD. Deadline is 4 August 2008.

iii) Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship

Fellowships for 4 years, for junior fellows who have had not more than two postdoctoral positions. For EEA or Swiss citizens only. Deadline 31 January.

3. European Union FP7 Fellowships

i) Marie Curie Fellowships

There are various fellowship schemes available under the FP7 scheme of the European Union. There are various Marie Curie fellowship schemes: International European fellowship (IEF, for EU citizens) and the International incoming fellowship (IIF, for non-EU citizens) are for 2 or 3 years, with deadline 16 August 2008.

ii) Early career Fellowships- ERC starting grants

These are highly competitive major fellowships (for up to 5 years), aimed at researchers between 3 to 8 years after submission of their PhD, of any nationality. Deadline 20 October 2008. Applications for these fellowships are time-consuming and require considerable effort, and require a joint effort with a host scientist. Please contact a host researcher in the ASR group well in advance of deadlines for advice. Some information on these fellowships can be found at FP7 Fellowships website.

4. IAU PPGF Fellowships

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) Peter and Patricia Gruber Foundation Fellowships are for one year, extendable to another year, are open to nationals of all countries, and are generally awarded to recent PhDs. The next deadline is 1 March 2009.

5. Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 and Lloyds Tercentenary Foundation Fellowships

These fellowships can be applied for with a single applicaion. They are for recent PhDs who are citizens of the UK, of the Commonwealth and of Ireland and Pakistan, are available for a period of 2 years, with applications due in February.Further details can be found at the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 Fellowship Pages.

6. ESA Fellowships

These fellowships are available for a period of 2 years, to nationals of ESA member states, withclosing dates for applications in March and September. Further details can be found at the ESA Fellowships webpage.

7. Commonwealth Fellowships

Citizens of the Commonwealth with postdoctoral experience can apply for mid-career grants (valid for up to six months at a time) to visit our group. Further details can be found at the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship plan website.

8. Leverhulme Trust

Research fellowships for 3-24 months. Deadline 10 November 2008. More information at Leverhulme Trust grant pages.
