Reading a Data Tape

The UK ROSAT Data Centre sends out data tapes to PIs. Until May 1994, these tapes were always in VMS backup format. After that date, the default format became unix tar.

You can read the unix data tapes to disk with the command

       > tar -xvf /dev/rmt0l

where /dev/rmt0l is the device filename for the tape drive. Extracted files will be placed in the current directory.
