UK investigators can easily get archive datasets from the on-line service maintained by the Leicester Database and Archive Service (LEDAS). Access is described in detail in The LEDAS User Guide but will be describe very briefly here.
http://ledas-www.star.le.ac.uk/info/user_guide
The archive service is currently run from a DEC Alpha and is accessible via ssh (or telnet) and the WWW.
Connect to the LEDAS machine:
> ssh ledas.star.le.ac.uk
Use the username xray, no password is required. After giving your name, you will see a prompt. Type
ledas> browse rospublic
You will then be using the Browse Database Management System, which has been described in a Users Guide (ESA TM-11, distributed to all Starlink sites as a MUD). The system is not described here, however, if you know the position or name of your target, or the original PI name, you can issue one of the following commands:
rospublic_total_dec> sc 10 20 30 +20 30 40 rospublic_total_dec> sn crab rospublic_total_dec> sif pi smith
These perform searches, the results from which can be seen with the display sample command ds. Once the dataset required is identified, the command request will cause the dataset to be read from the CD jukebox to a staging area from which you can copy the data over the net to your home site. The system will mail you when the data is ready for copying, usually within 5 minutes of the request command being issued.
An alternative method using the WWW at Leicester and the ARNIE interface can be found at:
