Understanding one of the greatest achievements of humanity

Programme of events:

10:00 - 10:15 Welcome

10:15 - 11:30 Activity session 1 - see below for options

11:30 - 12:30 Talk 1: Prof Peter Willmore on Spacelab 2

12:30 - 13:30 Lunch, there are a variety of options around campus, more info below. Exhibition stands (in coffee lounge) and tour of the telescopes will also be available.

13:30 - 14:45 Activity Session 2 - See below for options

14:45 - 15:00 Break, exhibition stands (in coffee lounge)

15:00 - 15:45 Talk 2: Anu Ojha on the History of the Space Shuttles and human Space Flight!

15:45 - 16:00 Concluding remarks and close.

Activity sessions:

Going into Space and back! - Spread over morning and afternoon, with the morning dealing with the fundamentals of how rockets work with building an air rocket, and the afternoon looking at how the various Space Agencies get their precious cargo's of astronauts and equipment to land safely on the ground again with construction of your own landing capsule.

Scale of the Universe - Just how big is the solar system? Find out with a scale size tour of the solar system on the campus grounds

Spaceflight Quiz - Test your knowledge of spaceflight with this pub quiz style competition!

Telescope Tour - If the weather is good, head out onto the roof of Poynting Physics for a tour of our telescopes during the lunch break. The main attraction will include the recently refurbished 1872 Grubb Telescope.

Exhibition Stands: During the day there will also be an exhibition stand provided by members of the Midlands Space Flight Society.

Lunch Options: The University campus offers a wide range of selections of food, from sandwich shops (the is a Subway/Spar in the Guild of Students) to cooked meals (Avanti at University Centre). The University is also a five minute walk away from Selly Oak where you will find a vast range of restaurants and take outs. Tea and biscuits will be available throughout the day however.

Event Location: The day will be taking place in the Poynting Physics Building (R13 on the University map), the talks will take place in the Large Lecture Theatre (S02). Directions to the University can be found on the University's visitor information pages and a campus map can be found here.
