My Job
I am a Professor of Astrophysics at the School of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Birmingham.
My research interests include general relativity, compact objects - black holes and neutron stars - and cosmology. At present I work primarily on gravitational wave observations with a range of instruments and techniques: ground-based laser interferometers (GEO 600, LIGO and VIRGO), the future Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and Pulsar Timing Arrays. I am also involved in the instrumental development of Advanced LIGO, the upgrade of the current LIGO instruments in the USA.
Before Birmingham ...
I was born in Mantova (Italy).
After studying theoretical physics as an undergraduate (Laurea) at Collegio Ghislieri and the Universita' di Pavia, I gained a Ph.D. in astronomy from the Universita' di Milano.
I held post-doctoral positions at Cardiff University and the Albert-Einstein-Institut (Max-Planck-Institut fuer Gravitationsphysik) in Potsdam, where I stayed as research scientist before joining the University of Birmingham.
In 2006/07 I was visiting scholar at Northwestern University in the USA.
