RealTime Telemetry
SMEI data is received at Birmingham near-realtime, and an automated process loads telemetry data into a large archive. A graphing tool called RRDTool is used to provide access to this data to interested parties.
There are a number of pre-configured summary pages available:
- Camera Analogue Monitors
- Camera Image Frame Monitors
- DHU Software Monitors
- Data Processing Pipeline Individual X-Band Site Status
- Data Processing Pipeline Combined X-Band Site Status
- Data Processing Pipeline Range-Sorted Status
- Data Processing Pipeline File Transfer Statistics
- Data Processing Pipeline Recent Image Display
For advanced users, there is a fully configurable graph generator.
Telemetry Interpretation
SMEI has a large number of telemetry points, and in conjunction with the design information, some notes on important parameters are available, categorised by sub-unit.

Event Archive
During the mission, some major events recorded in the telemetry are linked to from here.
- Camera Door Openning and end of CCD contamination control temperature setting.
- Camera Baffle Temperature changes after openning each camera door.
- Camera 3 Radiator temperature reaches -12C when vehicle is in nominal orientation.
- The same plot for camera 2 shows much colder temperatures.
- Controlling the camera 3 ccd to -2C and +3C shows the linkage to the radiator temperature.
- Reduction in CCD temperatures to find lower limits, and subsequent restabilisation.
- Camera Frame Data Loss and Resolution.
