Scientific Background

The cold dark matter (CDM) model reproduces well the observed large scale structure of the local universe, however on smaller scales non-linear collapse of dark matter halos and the presence of baryons complicate the picture severely. How does the hierarchical assembly of dark matter halos modify the galaxies and gas trapped in those halos? What is the relationship between baryonic structures, and the underlying substructure of dark matter halos? Is the substructure of dark matter halos consistent with CDM? This Workshop will address these questions, emphasising the relationship between dark and luminous substructure.

Much observational progress has been made in recent years in the multi-wavelength/technique study of substructures within dark matter halos spanning the local group, through massive galaxies and their group environments, to the most massive galaxy clusters. We aim to discuss these results and their interpretation, and to identify the important open questions. Looking forward, we therefore anticipate lively discussion including:

  • "what questions should we ask of the latest (and future?) generation of theoretical simulations and models?" and;
  • "what challenges might new observational surveys face when comparing new samples of more distant objects with their 'local' counterparts?".

The Birmingham-Nottingham Extragalactic Workshops typically involve ~50 participants. This year's meeting will be held in the School of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Birmingham. The format will comprise a mixture of 15 and 30 minute talks, with plenty of time for discussion.

Organising committee


Travel to Birmingham: It is very convenient to travel to the University by train. Birmingham University has its own station called "University", which is an 8 min ride from Birmingham New Street station, with local trains from New Street running every 10-15 mins during most of the day.

From the University station walk towards the centre of the campus, aim in the general direction of the clock tower, which is in Chancellors Court. The meeting will be held in the Small Lecture Theatre, accessible via the Physics West Building. Physics West is on the other side of Chancellor's Court from the station. Enter the building through the door facing the clock tower; signs will be there to guide you to the lecture theatre.

Some car parking spaces will also be available, please let us know if you plan to travel by car.

Overnight Arrangements: Accommodation for the Thursday night is available in local hotels/B+Bs (a list is available here). We have also reserved 20 rooms on campus at Lucas House - these are available on a first come first served basis. The total cost for those staying at Lucas House, including meals & registration, will be approx 107.

Registration: Registration will take place on the morning of July 6th. The basic workshop fee will be 45 per participant. This will cover two lunches, plus the customary Balti at a local restaurant on the Thursday evening. Payment can be made by cash or cheque (but unfortunately not credit card) on arrival.

Projection Facilities: We will have the usual overhead projector and facilities for projecting Powerpoint presentations. As ever with Powerpoint you probably should have a back-up in the event of an incompatibility between our system and yours.
